How to Meditate

How to Meditate

Set the intention from the beginning that your spiritual life is important to you and is a priority. Without this intention, you will not get far.

Set aside a time daily that is for your meditation and prayer practice alone. It is advised that it be the same time each day. Begin with 10 to 20 minutes each day.

The morning is an ideal time to meditate, as your mind has not become involved with the day’s activities and responsibilities. You are refreshed and awake and in prime condition for meditation. It is not likely you will fall asleep, which is often an obstacle for beginning meditators.

  1. Begin by finding a comfortable, upright posture with your spine straight and body relaxed.  Place your hands comfortably in your lap. Make sure you are comfortable enough to sit without moving.  When the body moves, the mind moves… when the mind moves, the body becomes restless.
  2. Take a moment to acknowledge God, however you conceive of God.
  3. Gently withdraw your attention from your surroundings. Close your eyes and become inwardly attentive.
  4. Focus your attention on your breathing.  Notice the quality of your breath as it flows in and out of your nostrils.  Feel the coolness as you breathe in and the warmth as you breathe out.  Breathe normally.
  5. Direct your inner gaze to the spiritual eye, the point between and just above the eyebrows. This point is known as the doorway to the inner realms. Let your attention rest there. Allow the muscles in your face, around your eyes and your forehead to relax.
  6. Let your inner gaze be directed upward and out toward the horizon. Focus your attention up into the higher centers of the brain, and into the crown chakra located just above the top of the head.
  7. After a time, allow your attention to flow to the spiritual eye, and using your imagination, feel as if your breath is moving through the spiritual eye. Relax your entire body, let go of any tension.
  8. Look and listen within – let thoughts pass. Observe your thoughts, and then let them go. Do not get caught up in them.
  9. When the mind becomes quiet, remain in the peace of meditation for as long as you can.
  10. When you are ready to end your time of meditation, feel that your mind is clear and bright. Invite the light of the soul to fill you and bring vitality to your body.
  11. Consciously send out before you the energy you have called forth and offer the benefit that you’ve received from your meditation for the betterment of all beings. Affirm that it will overflow from you to bless the world and contribute to peace. This time just after meditation is an ideal time to pray.
  12. To conclude, return your attention to your surroundings and “ground” yourself prior to beginning your daily activities. Have a glass of water, a bite to eat, or interact with a pet. Do not get into your car or operate any machinery until you are fully present. You will be in an altered state just after meditation.

Return to this practice daily for the rest of your life.
Be happy and grateful.
